Businesses to benefit from new science testing centre
02/05/08

The Centre for Materials Discovery (CMD), a unique new facility in Liverpool can help in the drive to identify sustainable fuels, to test novel materials and to create exciting consumer products.

As the only one of its kind in the UK, it is supported by Liverpool University, the North West Development Agency (NWDA) and Merseyside European Objective One Programme. The Centre can speed up research and development. It enables rapid testing and development of organic and inorganic materials such as polymers and bio composites on a pilot scale, through use of a number of automated platforms capable of High Throughput (HT) formulation, synthesis, analytics and characterisation. There can be huge time savings in areas such as novel product delivery systems, product formulations and product characterisation.

Clients can be from UK or global and use hot desks, labs and meeting rooms. Dr Simon Longden, CMD Business manager said, “Our clients range from the small Biotech start-ups to large multinational Home & Personal Care companies creating consumer products. However, we have also started to see an increasing trend towards using HT to identify suitable materials for applications within fuel cell and Hydrogen storage technologies”. Early stage companies will see the Centre as a way of increasing their own capabilities. After many years working at the "big" end of speciality chemicals with ICI & Zeneca, where a specialised R&D skills pool and facilities were the norm, John Lewis is now MD of start-up R&D company 2DHeat Limited which is backed by MSIF’s Liverpool Seed Fund. He appreciates the specialised potential CMD could bring in extending his company's access to highly versatile resources & knowledge to achieve novel effects from chemicals and said, "We are about to embark upon several client driven challenges that will require novel materials solutions, as system components, to enable our highly versatile, carbon efficient heating elements to be used in increasingly demanding situations - CMD should be a great boon in helping us in this task".

Early stage companies seeking finance for creation and testing of novel materials can come to come to Liverpool Ventures for advice on approaching the Liverpool Seed Fund a Merseyside Special Investment Fund, managed by Alliance Fund Managers Ltd which is regulated by the Financial Services Authority in the course of investment business. Gill Hunt of Liverpool Ventures an MSIF Company said, ‘The Centre for Materials Discovery could help reduce time to develop new products and take them to market. This is an efficient use of time and money resources, and a way to move ahead of the competition.’

The Centre for Materials Discovery (CMD) was officially opened on 15 April 2008 when Dr George Baxter, director of science and innovation NWDA unveiled a plaque and speeches were made by Professor Drummond Bone, Vice Chancellor of University of Liverpool, Professor Dominic Tildesley (Unilever Chief Scientist) and Professor Andy Cooper (Director CMD).
