Heres proof that the music business really is changing shape
in the wake of the internet boom. SafeSell is a new software and
digital-rights management service that gives artists the freedom
to deliver work to their audience for no charge and then receive
payment from fans who like what they hear.
Artists and independent labels pay nothing to set up with SafeSell.
They only need a website. SafeSell provides encoding and handles
payment, 70% of which goes straight to the content owner
a good deal by industry standards.
SafeSell launched at MIDEM in January. Early adopters include
music-industry professional Judie Tzuke who, as well as co-writing
hits with the likes of Lucie Silvas and Alex Parks, has her own
label, Big Moon Records.
"SafeSell fills the gap in our online sales platform,"
says Tzuke, "Being in control of the prices and the extended
marketing opportunities makes SafeSell the best solution for our
business."
Clients can monitor their accounts for sales information, updated
on an hourly basis. Every month SafeSell transfers revenue to
clients, by electronic payment. For musicians who are frustrated
by an over-complicated music business, the system is simple and
direct, as Marketing Director Brian Pond explains: "It can
be purely about the relationship between the artist and their
audience, and the love a fan has for a song or an album. Theres
something honest about that and SafeSell allows it to happen."
SafeSell Ltd is based in Liverpool and is developing its business
with support coordinated through Liverpool Ventures Ltd. and investment
from the Liverpool Seed Fund which was set up to encourage innovation
in Merseyside. SafeSell Ltd is a division of Global Media Distribution.
