Schools urged to benefit from online cash bonanza
A Merseyside company that specializes in online learning for schools
is urging local head teachers to take advantage of a government
windfall.
Around £200m has been made available nationally to create
programmes to benefit both pupils and teachers.

The work of Taecanet, which relocated to Merseyside this year
from Wiltshire, is specifically designed to create e-learning
programmes.
One current project enables students to learn musical instruments
via their computers.
Ian Nairn, of Taecanet, explained: This is fantastic news
for schools. The government is very keen to stimulate new products
in education and has now put its money on the table.
"We have worked with a number of local schools on a variety
of e-projects that have been outstanding successes and we are
keen to do more."
This new way of working in the classroom with the use of words,
pictures and video clips is seen as the learning tool of the future.
Taecanet has received £250,000 backing from the new £27m
Liverpool Seed Fund with support from Liverpool Ventures.
The company has developed an approved curriculum based e-learning
system which means that pupils can benefit from personalised tuition
either at school at home or in the library.
One such project at. Brookfield
High School is leading the way in Knowsley, and Local Education
Authority officials in the borough are keen to see a wider take-up.
Subjects already covered in the service include: Science,
History and Geography, for upper junior school, and lower secondary
school age groups. Taecanet are also planning to introduce a music
programme for learning guitar, clarinet, saxophone, keyboards
and drums.
All schools and teachers face the
challenge of meeting government set targets for increasing the
use of technology across the curriculum and Taecanet are now in
talks with Lord Puttnam and Estelle Morris to establish a joint
project in Sunderland where they hold positions of University
Chancellor and Pro Vice-Chancellor respectively.
